We’ve been building lists of research tools but why re-create the wheel right? I was recently running through some tools mentioned on Best Colleges Online for some research I was running and came across a fantastic list of research engines, Video engines, Images and so forth.

Ironically the article is labeled “50 Awesome Search Engines for Librians….” My wife is a teacher and we often swap search tools which is how I came across this article. It’s great stuff. Enjoy.

Group, cluster, sort extract, export, filter: and search keywords, phrases, search results and candidates. This is what iMetaSearch lets you do for free.

Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) is what stands between Google and iMetaSearch. Now I won’t profess to be a expert in this area, but I will say that I have had a productive time gathering relevant information on my areas of research. The pure definition of LSA or LSI (Indexing) is that the system is analyzing documents to interpret the underlying meaning or concepts of those documents rather than matching word for word. Here is a great visual that breaks it down rather nicely.

If however you just want to assume it works and try this bad boy out you can download the free version HERE from PuffinWare.

See the videos below to help walk you through. We did nto create these videos as they have already been posted and created on the Puffinware website. Here they are. Pay them a visit and try out the tool.

Sourcing for candidates can be simple or it can be frustrating. Putting aside the intricacies of deep web searching this series will be dedicated to listing and explaining some best practices around leveraging people search tools to find and attract great talent. First, let me start by saying that there are obviously thousands of applications that are available to mine HC (human capital data).

Choosing the proper application can only be done by you using what you feel comfortable with.

The tools that I’ll be sharing will not require you to be a super duper sourcing hero. I hope you enjoy. Please share your best tools and practices if you like the tools.

Tool #1: Zoominfo

(Paid – but you can use it free via site searching to an extent) – Sure, it’s the standard and most everyone knows about the tool, but there is a reason for that. It’s good. In essence it’s deep aggregate of HC data that allows you to effectively source data and competitive intel form target companies including sales info, but more important prospect information of potential talent for your organization.

I’ve been using Zoominfo for a couple of years now to uncover talent that I could probably find otherwise, but possibly not as quick without spending valuable time searching.

Why I like Zoominfo:

1. The key is the relevance to the results set provided. The info is concise and package extremly well.

2. You are provided with the sources from which the intel was gathered from for your review. This is obviously a great soruce to have for further research and tracking

3. SImilar to Hoovers and Yahoo finace among others, your given suggestions and information around key intel such as finances, competitors and stake holders.

4. Leveraging the free version, you really do get a significant amount of free data that you can than cross reference.

Here’s an example:

1. Try a very basic Site search via Google to target specific titles / companies etc. You can also go directly to Zoominfo and play with their search features. I tend to have better results through Google. Also try yahoo and bing etc. to be sure you are maximizing all results sets.

2. See the set of results showing “software engineers” from Microsoft

3. Full profile and breakdown of sources of information on potential candidates

Now certainly you can get deeper with the results set as you hone in on your search. As you play with the tool be sure to try the search capabilities internal to the application as well.

Jim Stroud is a regular contributor the Sourcing community and we partner of some projects. I love his work and his videos are very informative. I recently viewed this small training video searching for resumes

on Dogpile.com. loved the video and Jim was gracious enough to allow me to share it on RecruitingTools with our readers.

In this episode of The Searchologist, Jim Stroud explains how to search Google, Yahoo and Bing more efficiently by using the metasearch engine – Dogpile. Plus, Otis Collier gives tips on how to increase views of your Linkedin profile.

Search Engine News: Blekko: Trying to Slash the Competition

Now that it is in public beta we can share some of our initial thoughts on Blekko. I’ll start by saying that I am certainly not the foremost expert on search engines, but I will say that this is why my view is important. I’m a user and I depend on these tools to provide results.

I love innovation as much as the next geek but when results are hindered by complexity I lose interest. This is what is happening with Blekko. Let me clarify that Blekko is still beta and when a tool is in beta you expect to not get perfect functionality. The trouble I am having with Blekko is that they are trying to introduce a completely new way of search to users that is potentially complex and requires users to learn a new process. It leverages what they call Slashtags. Slashtags according to Blekko’s site “allows users to slash in what they want and slash out what they don’t want”.

These slashtags work like filters and are built by you or others around the web. The idea is that the filters should contain the top rated sites bringing back only relevant results. In my opinion they’ve slashed out a large chunk of search users based on the fact that they have to learn a new way. I still find value here and we’ll share that in an upcoming post.

Based on the sites strengths and the people I’ve been able to speak with on Blekko it’s better used for quick research, SEO metrics and statistics. Sourcers and Market Mappers, this may be a nice addition to your suite of tools.

Blekko CEO speaks about the new release:

For better or for worse Google introduced a simplistic method of search. This has rung supreme eating more than 60% of the search market and could be the reason for Blekko being overlooked by everyday users. It happened to Cuil another engine that I liked but ultimately has failed to live up to its initial buzz. I am sure they’ll see some great traffic and buzz in the first few months but in the end I think we can chalk this one up to just another search engine.

Did you know who rules Search Engine Market Share?

Google: 62.9%

Yahoo!: 19.2

Bing: 12.5%

Ask: 3.4%

AOL: 2.0%

I’m not sure yet who the target audience is but it’s surely not the everyday browser.

Subscribe here to learn how to use Blekko to search resumes. We will be featuring a post dedicated to searching with Blekko in the coming days.

In October I spoke at ProjectSAME (for you outside the DC Metro area that it the Staffing Alliance of Maryland Employers). The presentation was focused on my adjustment to my new work life as a Strategic Recruiting Manager after my former life as Technical Writer and Sourcing Researcher. And of course, paramount to this discussion was tools. Because now I’m in the throes of managing candidates, their profiles, contact and more. And to be honest, time is precious.

But Google helps, immensely.

Here’s my Core 4 that help me get my job done and I’d be lost without:

Chrome: If you’ve read anything I’ve ever written, you know I’m a nut about Chrome. I have about 5 extensions that I use regularly: Bit.ly, LightShot, See Google Similar Pages, ChromedBird, and ChromeIn. I only use IE now because of icims or the occasional webinar that requires it. That’s the only reason. When I can drop it forever I will.

Bookmarks: I used to believe in hyper organizing my bookmarks. But now I have 5 main folders:

Directories – have more than 200 just 60 days into the gig, so they earned a bookmark of their own

Team (that’s my team…data specific to their individual needs)

Search Strings (Templates stored first, favorites and works in progress fall in line)

Resources

Social Media Niche (I’m constantly on the hunt for niche sites…this helps me track them)

Docs: Brian Solis has a great quote… “Keep It Simple and Shareable” and that fits my team to a T. We have increased our review time and eliminated about a 100 emails a day just by sharing information via the cloud. It’s a beautiful thing.

Custom Search Engines: These are amazing. If you don’t know how to create one, go get training on how. The ability to target my search across select competitors, or industry organizations, or social networks or whatever is huge. And I don’t have to deal with all the other random results I’m not interested in. Completely friendly to all of Google’s unique operators too.

I’m sure there will be items that I tweak and drop over time. Part of my job is to figure out how I can get the most done in the least amount of time. And where free is available and quality is top notch, I’m there.

Check out Google Bookmarks “How To” **Note: This is not a recruiting example so you’ll have to relate this to recruiting**

How to source hundreds of Mortgage, Loan and Banking professional in my zip code in 60 seconds

Video at the bottom

60 seconds? Yep, and it wasn’t rocket science. Sourcing is not rocket science. In fact most people ask me what I do for a living and I just tell them I play on the internet and smile. Bottom line is that it’s my job to unearth names, contacts, emails, phones numbers and any intelligence I can for my clients.

Now you can apply this technique to most any industry especially sales or any occupation that requires the person to be available to client around the clock. Technical service professionals, sales people, pharmaceutical reps, banking professionals, security people, and technology and on call IT professionals etc. Another example of how I like to use lcoal meetups and confrences to source is with Ignite or LinkedIn Events.

3 Steps I used to find more than 320 Lenders, their cell phones, emails and location including zip code (Some with social networking profiles)

Goto: http://www.Google.com and in the search bar type the name of the institution you are targeting.

Click on the appropriate tab for company contacts or service providers “in your area”. This can be a local branch or office in your target area. (Typically avoided because most people think that is for the leadership of the company)

Enter the zip code of your target location and there you have it.

Use a contact capture tool like Contact Capture which is free from Broadlook or List Grabber Minimal fee) from e-grabber to rip out the all the contact information for your recruitment campaign.

Now it’s not always that simple, but I routinely gather hundreds of names, contacts and emails to contact for clients, our sales team and our project recruiters.

See it in action below:

This past month it seems like lists of tools are getting the most value to the readers so here is another list that I’ve been putting together over the last few weeks on Meta-Search engines. The list is really nothing more than the engines I tend to lean on for varying projects.

What is a Meta Search Engine? Ask Google: define:Meta search:

A Meta Search engine is a search tool that sends user requests to several other search engines and/or databases and aggregates the results into a single list or displays them according to their source

Here is a raw list with a brief description. Feel free to add your own and we can grow a significant list for the community.

Meta Search Engines

Browsys: A pretty slick engine that allows you to run searches across various engines checking the results by simply clicking the tab. The key here is that Browsys uses “virtual folders” to allow you to store grow and share information.

SortFix: May be one of my favorites. Simply run your search and SortFix will extract the power words and allow you to remove, add or sort what it extracted into boxes. These boxes are built upon as you move through Google, Bing, Yahoo, Twitter etc. Give it a shot and what there video as well.

Dogpile: An oldie but goodies displaying functional clusters for you to investigate

Keotag: Is a neat search tool that allows you to run a search based on simple keywords. The search aggregates results based on the last 30 days of activity around blog and community based postings, allowing you to monitor recent and relevant activity to your search targets. There are varying tools withing Keotag, so be sure to play around a bit.

Ixquick is a favorite of mine as it ranks returned results based on the top ten ranking from designated engines. You can see the previous tutorial on Ixquick here:

OneRiot: is another old timer but helps to put relevancy behind real-time social searching on Twitter, Facebook, Digg and Myspace, among others.

ZapMeta: is a strong meta search tool I really like. It supports basic and advanced search queries (Boolean) and will manipulate to the best of its ability the expression to meet the required engine it is ripping results from. You’ll find strong results with phrase searching, truncation, proximity among others.

Zuula: is an ok meta search tool but still worth a mention. It’s your typical aggregator pulling from various sources including images, files, video mp3 etc. You can set advanced preferences which I like, similar to Google changing returned results to 100, among other options.

WhoNu is a pretty popular search tool around these parts. Run your search and real-time filter your results to show publication times, images, files etc. It’s quick, rarely gets hung up and I use it often for research and industry mapping. Options include sysntax you may be familiar with if you are a Boolean addict. The example on the link is run under Gene Expression

Searchzooka: is a site based in Dallas Texas and referred to me from a fellow recruiter. It will allow you to run advanced searches on the big 3 search engines and I wanted to include it in this list for you all but I am not a huge fan just yet. I am sure it has a ton of value but I have not put much time into it just yet.

Efficiency and organization are 2 things that allow me to run my desk successfully. I'm not a fan of overloading on the latest and greatest but I do load my arsenal with gadgets that will help me gather information in a better more efficient manner. Here are 3 more Firefox add-ons for recruiters that I recommend.

Qrobe.it

This is a neat add-on that I use daily. I am big on shortcuts when using a PC and this add-on is a great extension to that process. I like this one because it allows for “infinite scrolling” throughout web and image based results allowing you to “peek” inside the result. The peek is ok, but is a bit annoying sort of like the new Google image search.

The main reason I like this add-on is for its shortcuts. You’ll have to play with them to get yourself familiar but essentially you are able to search various sites with abbreviations direct from your browsers search bar.

For example: I want to search YouTube for a video on software engineering to help target some leads.

From my search bar I simply type:

“software engineer” /yt

Obviously the yt = YouTube/ At this time there are about 20 “power hints” as the call them that you can use.

Download it here: http://bit.ly/bBzoQf

Zapom

I tend to incorporate video search and video resumes into all of my searches. Zapom is one of those search aggregators that focuses of video search. It’s not perfect but it certainly saves me a boat load of time allowing to search results for over 100 video services online.

Not all are relevant to my searches but it doesn’t hurt or cost me anytime when I am running 1 blanket search.

Download it here: http://bit.ly/cnUe6l

PDF Ebook searches:

Now this one is pretty basic but I love automation. In fact there are a few similar custom Google engines running around that do the same thing. The purpose f using searches like this are to help save me some time with finding ebooks and papers authored by potential candidates.

This is definitely not the best way but it is effective and yes the same results can be attained manually fairly simple.

Download it here: http://bit.ly/buPrG5
