Efficiency and organization are 2 things that allow me to run my desk successfully. I'm not a fan of overloading on the latest and greatest but I do load my arsenal with gadgets that will help me gather information in a better more efficient manner. Here are 3 more Firefox add-ons for recruiters that I recommend.

Qrobe.it

This is a neat add-on that I use daily. I am big on shortcuts when using a PC and this add-on is a great extension to that process. I like this one because it allows for “infinite scrolling” throughout web and image based results allowing you to “peek” inside the result. The peek is ok, but is a bit annoying sort of like the new Google image search.

The main reason I like this add-on is for its shortcuts. You’ll have to play with them to get yourself familiar but essentially you are able to search various sites with abbreviations direct from your browsers search bar.

For example: I want to search YouTube for a video on software engineering to help target some leads.

From my search bar I simply type:

“software engineer” /yt

Obviously the yt = YouTube/ At this time there are about 20 “power hints” as the call them that you can use.

Download it here: http://bit.ly/bBzoQf

Zapom

I tend to incorporate video search and video resumes into all of my searches. Zapom is one of those search aggregators that focuses of video search. It’s not perfect but it certainly saves me a boat load of time allowing to search results for over 100 video services online.

Not all are relevant to my searches but it doesn’t hurt or cost me anytime when I am running 1 blanket search.

Download it here: http://bit.ly/cnUe6l

PDF Ebook searches:

Now this one is pretty basic but I love automation. In fact there are a few similar custom Google engines running around that do the same thing. The purpose f using searches like this are to help save me some time with finding ebooks and papers authored by potential candidates.

This is definitely not the best way but it is effective and yes the same results can be attained manually fairly simple.

Download it here: http://bit.ly/buPrG5

Not all social recruiting apps and tools have to cost money to use. Not all of them are good either. Regardless you need to experiment with different tools to see what works. Here are 6 strong FireFox Add-on's to consider for research.

Firefox has changed the world of web surfing through an easily changeable open source program. You can download various extensions to make Firefox just the way you want it. Recruiting with Firefox is great with these extensions. The last few weeks saw a flurry of emails asking for my suggestions on Firefox Add-ons for researchers and recruiters. As I went back through some posts on Firefox, I realized that we never followed through on some of our most popular posts on Firefox.

Here are some add-ons that I use on a regular basis to help in research, sourcing, and recruiting. Now I don’t use each of these daily but they certainly come in handy depending on the search I am running.

Facebook Search

This is a nice app that allows you to search Facebook without logging in. I like this app, but you need to experiment with the search capabilities. It will except some basic Boolean queries and if you work with it properly you can target individual profiles.

100 Search Engines

This is a fairly simple add-on and as the name indicates it allows you to search 100+ search engines outside of the big 3. There are 2 ways to search. You can use the add-on or you can visit the site direct. The site itself has a nice layout and is packed with search resources you may not be familiar with.

Buzzy.com

If you are into real time search and like to stay abreast on trending topics, Buzzy will be a fun add-on to play with. I personally do not use this too often, however it does come in useful when I am researching clients and performing due diligence on my clients brand awareness.

OneRiot

Another strong real time search add-on that targets the social web, news sites, blogs etc. The site is based on social relevancy and similar to apps like Buzzy will connect the dots for you between trending topics and real time conversations.

IEEE Spectrum

This gets a little more specific and won’t be relevant to everyone. But if you target IEEE.org this will be a strong add-on to test. This will let you search directly into the Spectrum Magazine.

File Search Engine

Just because I like to search various platforms (yes sometimes even outside of recruitment) This add-on helps to locate some very files in my research. You can surely use some target search strings her but the results from this add-on is worth a shot.

Recruiting with Firefox is easier because of these add-ons and extensions. Firefox can turn the Internet into your own personal candidate resume database and custom sourcing faster and more powerful. If your corporate IT department doesn’t allow recruiters to download and load Firefox, well, maybe it’s time to get a new job.

We find that the challenge most recruiters face is that that simply do not have the access to technology to help them source. Of course technology is not the answer but here are 6 demo’s you’ll love.

Conference and Event Sourcing:

Too often recruiters and sourcers overlook the free tools that they use every day to uncover leads, otherwise left unfound.

Firefox Add-ons:

I love to use Firefox, especially ones that make me more efficient. There are many that we talk about on RecruitingTools, but here is one that I featured this month.

You should, we give away really cool things for free: Click to Subscribe

Continuing the series on Firefox add-on’s I wanted to share with you another of my favorites. It’s called Super Search and it’s been out about a years or so. Sounds a bit quirky but it works and can help you to streamline your search efforts. Now you can certainly create similar tool bars on your own bit this is a nice one that is already packed with good stuff. Not the best but good and it helps.

Super Search stores more than 160 of the best people search and web search engines in one handy add-on, including 67 searches that can be done right from the toolbar, without having to visit each site and retype the name or search term that you are searching.

** Tip: Try search in the toolbar’s search bar and choose different searches. You’ll see that you do not have to retype the search over and over. A nice way to save time and search multiple platforms.

There are services out there that allow you to create your own toolbars and they are fairly easy to use but this is a great start for those of you that just need a little more organization in your search.

Con’s (Just 2)

You cannot update the toolbar (you can make your own through other services)

You cannot reorganize the toolbar

Download Super Search Here

Researching is an essential part of a recruiter’s day. Trying to stay focused is comparable to not eating chocolate on a diet. Here’s a compilation of my top 10 apps I run on Firefox today. I don’t use all of them all of the time, but they are all active and make use of them when appropriate.

All of the add-ons below can be used in some way for recruiting.

Thoughts?

1. Xmarks – Bookmark Synchronizer

I love Xmark because I work on multiple systems. It’s essential for me to have access to my bookmarks regardless of the system I am on. Xmark will keep you up to date on all systems. In an upcoming post I’ll show you how I use my bookmarks for recruiting.

2. Read it Later

So, how often do you save articles or snippets from your research to your favorites bar? Than it gets completely overwhelmed and unorganized. Read it later allows me to manage this influx temporarily saving the complete article for me. I can refer back to them later, save them to read offline and mark them as read and delete them if needed.

3. DownThemAll

I’ve spoken about this one for a long time now and have a post on it here detailing how to use it for recruitment. This might be my favorite. Simply run your resume search and download the entire resume setwith a click. Organize and review later. Very useful.

4. MyStickies

Another strong app for research and organization. This app allows me to leave little sticky notes on a website, browser page etc. and organize my thoughts into tabs for very easy browsing. This is more of a preference add-on to make my life a bit easier for browsing.

5. Net Notes

A neat little app that allows me to use my hundreds of sticky notes and attach them to my bookmarks. Again a preference add-on but extremely valuable to me for easy access to my notes.

6. DeeperWeb

This is a pretty cool app that lets me uncover news items, press releases, Q&A fairly quick. It works on a tag system so everything is easily accessible and quickly found.

7. Research Words

A simple but very useful app. Simply right click on a word and you can run some deeper research on that particular term. Could be a bit sharper though with phrases and groups of words.

8. Screengrab!

More often than not I use Jing to capture images etc. I still recommend screengrab as it’s a great tool. Essentially serves as a screen capture tool.

To quickly capture an entire web page, Screengrab is a great tool. It can save or copy an entire page, the

9. Echofon

Echofon (Formerly Twitterfox) is another strong twitter app. I most often use Tweetdeck but if I am in my browser I can also use this neat little app. it sits on the bottom end of your browser and lets you quick get updates and send messages via your browser.

10. TwitBin

It’s a noteworthy mention since it accomplishes everything Echofon does. The main difference is the display. I like the display better, as it uses tabs but it takes away from browser space. In that case I prefer Tweetdeck. Still worth looking at.

Apps and Addon’s can make your online sourcing activity more productive only if you leverage them properly. Firefox is jammed packed with great addon’s and many that I use daily. Down the all was probably one of the first I’ve used and the one I use the most today.

Firefox is no doubt one the more likable browsers to use and it’s certainly packed with features that are recruiter friendly. A while back (November 2009) I started to put together this series but it never actually made it to posting. Now that we are smack in the middle of the Recruiting Carnival and I’m itching to post I figured it’s time to kick it off.

Let’s start with Down them all. Down them all is certainly not new but it’s super effective and can really limit wasted time when searching resumes online. Check out the video below. It’s a basic example on how to leverage Down them all while creating a BASIC Boolean string. I capitalized Basic because know it’s basic and not as cool of an example as I could have used.

Let me know your thoughts and your favorite addon’s as well.
