This is the first of a series of posts that I’m going to be posting for Ryan over the next few months, and i’m going to do somthing different.

Through my work with #tru, I get to look at a lot of applications, tools and channels that can be used for recruiting, HR and internal coms. Most of them have atleast an entry level free version that you can try out, play around with and determine if they work before you make an investment. (some will stay free for ever!). I also read a lot of blogs that point me towards these applications. Twitter is like on on-line mall for these things.

In each of these posts I’m going to share 5 cool tools that I’ve found that you can go and have a look at.

If I list somthing, i’m not endorsing how well it works. I’m just saying that it works for me. (I won’t post anything I haven’t tried.)

I’m not going to tell you how to use it. Thats up to you to look at it and work out if it fits in your toolbox.

I will answer any questions or thoughts you may have via the comments section.

I will give you a brief description of what it is.

I won’t call anything a must have, that’s your choice.

I promise not to use the words “Transparent”, “Brand”, “Engage”, “Conversation”, “Authenticity” or any other Cool Aid Terms.

You can read all about these topics elsewhere. Just google them!

I’m not paid by anyone to promote them, though I will accept Beer or simmilar donations!

My 5 for this week:

Wordle.Net – Produces a word cloud from any document you copy and feed in. Bios, Job descriptions, resumes, profiles etc

Linked In Job Insider – discrete toolbar that works with Li and 7 job boards. shows your connections to the company, relationship to the hiring manager, share and lots of other functionality.

Twitteranalyzer- Comprehensive range of stats on twitter use by named accounts and their following

BranchOut – Turns facebook in to a Linked In type network, with added job posting/sharing function.

Addict-O-Matic - Aggregates web content from multiple channels on a target name or company.

That is this weeks 5. let me know how you get on, or recommend your own.

Remember to play nicely with each other!

Bill

I spoke with Bill Fischer and his thoughts are: “We’re going through the popular Twitter tools one-by-one to build specialized versions for recruitment.”

Thoughts?

Of course technology is not the answer but here are 6 demo’s you’ll love.

Conference and Event Sourcing:

Too often recruiters and sourcers overlook the free tools that they use every day to uncover leads, otherwise left unfound.

Sourcing leads from your target market with Ignite Conferences: http://bit.ly/igniteconf

Breaking through the barriers with LinkedIn Events: http://bit.ly/Li_Events

Real-Time sourcing with Twitter:

2 precise twitter sourcing tools that target real time events, profiles and geographies:

LocaFollow: http://bit.ly/locafoll

Firefox Add-ons:

I love to use Firefox, especially ones that make me more efficient. There are many that we talk about on RecruitingTools, but here is one that I featured this month.

Firefox Add-on: Super Search 160: http://bit.ly/firefoxsupersearch

Google Wonder Wheel:

I love this one. If not for the results than for the coolness factor: http://bit.ly/gwonderwheel

It’s simple to use and will help you make sense out of your Twitterverse. Here are a few key points (below the video) taken from the FAQ’s of Tweetgrid but check out the 2 minute video on making your #TNL experience the best it can be.

Try searching keyword or tweets to and from individual tweeters:

To:ryaneary

Hootsuite for those that don’t know it or use it is about to get downright nasty in this game. Not nasty in a bad way but the app has grown and it’s going to sick. Forget the discussion internally about ROI and team management, this group has got it for you and recruiters need Hootsuite.

HootSuite also releases it’s second URL shortner: Ow.ly and Ht.ly ~ Choose Bar or Non-bar URL Shortener for HootSuite

Now on a disclaimer, I’ve been a fan of Hootsuite for about 1 ½ years. I also use Tweetdeck and Tweetgrid in my recruiting, but comparing apples to apples the oversight that you are given with Hootsuite demolishes its rivals. You can measure full analytics, clicks, assignments, conversions and more. Recently at #TRUUSA (a conference for recruiters) we spoke in detail about the tool but today I got the chance to chat with Ryan Holmes, the man behind the mirror. Ryan is the CEO / Founder of Hootsuite, he is sharp and as easy going as his tool.

I can’t blow the lid today but here are a few key Hootsuite features that can be found on their site:

Play with these and keep an eye out for the next update.

Click below to view all of the apps

Recruiters need Hootsuite and other social media automation tools to be part of their daily recruiting process and arsenal. This new version of Hootsuite offers some interesting new functionality – check it out today.

To help you locate Twitter users by searching their Bio and Location fields within their profile. It’s very simple to use and pretty effective. It’s a great way to see some return on your time spent “Recruiting” on Twitter.

Pros:

Geo Search enabled

Results come from Google and are than ranked by Locafollow

Quick and easy to bulk follow, message and conenct with your targets

Cons:

A tiny bit glitchy (but not enough to make it useless)

Compared to Followerwonk, it’s not a expansive in sharing Bio based information.

Remember, social recruiting is simply about connecting online and then taking that relationship offline as quickly as possible to close the deal. Take a look at my thoughts here and if you think this tool is good you’ll definitely be interested in Followerwonk to search Twitter a bit more efficiently as well.

Twitter this, Twitter that. Recruiters are starting to seem desperate on how to measure and use Twitter for recruiting. Let’s keep this simple and skip the theory. It’s about tactics and understanding how to use the tools to connect and then take that connection offline. Followerwonk is one way to try it.

The past few weeks for some reason have really been heavy on posts and chatter around Twitter and recruiting. Webinars have gone crazy and basically companies have saturated the recruiting market with useless beginner type webinars.

I’m not going to bore you here with that mess. Here’s another app that I like and have had some luck with over the last few weeks in comparing and sourcing direct talent from Twitter.

2 reasons why I like Followerwonk for recruiting with Twitter:

Super quick and clean

Compares profiles and Bio’s live and presents the information in a succinct meaningful manner.

Here’s a quick review of Followerwonk. Let me know your thoughts.

I post today with a little curiosity surrounding Twitter. To be honest the site is horrible. It’s boring, lacks interactive features and is frankly everything (In design) opposite of what is preached as hip and cool today. Regardless, in a sad attempt to be cool, here are 2 new features being released.

A little different type of post today. It’s sticks to the tool theme, but it’s written with a little curiosity. If Tweetdeck or your favorite Twitter client did not exist would Twitter be what is today?

As with all sites social, Twitter aims to keep ahead of the game integrating much requested features. Ironically the main site Twitter.com is surprisingly boring and really not all that interactive. It’s a challenge that I find to be pretty silly since apps like Tweetdeck have changed the way the Twitter game is played.

An interesting question would be if Tweetdeck were to go away, would you still tweet?

Just today on the Twitter blog, @jennadawn talks about a new feature that will surely help to create a better user experience. It’s called Hovercards. It’s in beta now so not everyone will see this but essentially it’s a feature that will allow you to hover over the username of a follower to see more information. Pretty basic stuff.

The addition here is that you will now have the opportunity to interact with the tweet. By hovering, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with, follow and learn more about those that have been re-tweeted without having to leave the page you are on. Now that’s useful.

But I haven’t tweeted on Twitter.com for a very long time and I do not think this will bring me back.

Which leads me to the second pretty cool new feature. Recently released and not so talked about Local Trends. I’ll admit that I like this one personally. But that because I like to keep up on my local area. Will it get me back to Twitter.com, no but I wanted to share it with you anyway.

Look, in the end Tweetdeck among a host of other clients have so many more rich features and esthetically pleasing UI’s that it may be the end of the rise for Twitter.com (The site). Now I stress that because I trust the team here will not stand pat. Something big is on the horizon people. Trust me on this one.

I’ll tell you about it soon.

Here is the newer Local Trending Topics

You can find the local trends box about 3/4 down the sidebar on the left

Select your city. Not all are avaialble yet…Just the cool ones.

And than you can see, choose and Tweet about your local trends.

What is e-sourcing? That is the question. Ok, enough of the cheesy stuff. But seriously what is it? To me, it’s leveraging technology to identify talent within this crazy sphere we call the web. You can learn more about what Boolean Black Belt thinks about it here in depth.

Continuing the series on Twitter, I wanted to share my thoughts on mashing video with Twitter.

Video is compelling to users and if used properly could be a great addition to you recruitment plan. Thoughtfully leveraging video in your properly built twitter stream can result in big return. In fact Twitter itself is considering adding video in relatime tweet fashion.

According to TFTS : Twitter’s founders are looking at implementing real-time video tweeting in a bid to push the Twitter medium forward as the most prominent social networking application just when it’s been suggested that the service is running the risk of stagnating rather than acting to develop and push for fresh features in order to keep up with the times.

How to make this work for recruiters:

Thoughtfully leveraging your video:

How you create and distribute your video really affects the success of your campaign. Here are a few certainly not all of the strong Do’s and Do not’s for you to consider.

Do Not!

Do not act stupid and/or use profanity

Do not talk down to the user and make them feel useless

Do not be super professional and use a TV studio for recording

Do not be superficial and wordy (You give 30 secs. to a resume. They give your video 10 if it’s bad)

Do not assume every video has to be the same. You have to infuse your personality (personally) and the company’s culture.

DO

Do be genuine and infuse your own personality

Do be concise and give strong juicy details

Do focus on the traits you would use to build your search. Ie. Talk about leadership and what the succession plan is within the organization. (depending on the role and level)

Do have a plan for distribution. Be sure you are building your corporate twitter account properly and that you are leveraging your employees networks to distribute, distribute, distribute.

Properly building your Twitter Stream

I’ll be posting shortly on how to properly construct and manage your twitter stream to show effective returns as well as demos of my favorite Twitter video tools.

Get updated here to be the first to read it when it’s posted.

Here are my top 3 Twitter Video tools I like to use.

Vidly

Vidly is a pretty decent app in that it allows you to record or upload your video quickly. You can upload from your computer, a url or your mobile. The app offers full twitter capability as well including Retweets. The video size is solid excepting video in length of 20 minutes or 1gb in size.

If your recruiting video is that large, you lost the prospects of finding someone to fill the job anyway. The interface is clean, which to me is a big peice of the puzzle and the ability to record via webcam though not super high tech in it’s ability moves very fast and gave me no trouble throughout my useage.

 TwitVid

This may be my favorite to date. I’ve been using the app for a short while now and I’ve found it to be the choice of many celebrities if you are into that type of thing. It’s really simple to use, quick and unassuming. But Twitvid is more than just a way to add and share video via Twitter.

Twitvid offers a strong tracking package. As a recruiter or corporate recruiting organization Twitvid allows you to measure your return via it’s tracking and video analytics. The cool thing about this is that posters can now track their video as across the Twitsphere tracking views and the top people linking to your video.

The cool thing is that the layout mimics that of Twitter. It’s pretty cool and addicting. Check it out.

TwitLens

Ok, so with twitlens you have the option to upload both pics and video. The interface is a little cheesy for me, but I do like the fact that it’s a secure login as opposed to using your Twitter login as the only means of security.

The idea is the same and the functions are certainly strong. The other pretty cool integration here is that it took the tagging idea from Facebook allowing you to tag others as you please. (probably not super tasteful for recruiters but it works)

Fast moving development win over many users and creates a successful app. Tweetdeck has taken that approach and has since won over the vast majority of the Twitter market. It's quick, convenient and serves a real purpose. It's an organization tool that helps recruiters better manage their time on social media. Check out my top 3 integrations.

Tweetdeck has been on the move and has kept hip to the needs of its fans. “Fan’s” in my case are recruiters, but even if you are not a recruiter you can appreciate the developments that the Tweetdeck team continues to make. There are 3 new changes in the last few months that I find to be a big deal and worth mentioning here.

LinkedIn Integration

Sure LinkedIn has finally seen some of the light that has been shining and has mimicked the Twitter style updates to your LinkedIn network, but even more notable is the full integration of LinkedIn into your Tweetdeck dashboard. You can now dedicate one of your Tweetdeck columns to your LinkedIn feed. Tack and stay in touch with your LinkedIn connections on Tweetdeck.

Why is this important? Unless you are superman, there is seriously no way you are managing any sort of meaningful relationship with your LinkedIn connections. Mass emailing doesn’t cut it, and I’d argue it only weakens as semblance of a relationship you once had. This integration into Tweetdeck allows you follow and connect with your connections helping to create the connections you thought you once had.

Twitter Lists

With the newest addition to Twitter being Twitter lists which I talk about and demo here, Tweetdeck was quick to take this integration on. You have the opportunity to from within Tweetdeck, create, add and manage your Twitter lists, sort and follow from within a designated column and follow targeted conversations.

Geo-targeted Tweets

This may be one of my favorite integrations yet. Certainly it offers many possibilities for recruiters but even with that, it’s just really cool to see where your tweeps are tweeting from.

Here’s a quick video breaking down the newest features. It’s not an original video, but why recreate the wheel? I’m interested to learn your thoughts and views on the newest integrations.
